Year 4 information – 2016/17
Class structure and Organisation
- Mrs Fletcher (KS2 leader/Assistant Head teacher) and Mrs Edwards (Y4 leader) teach Badger Class and Miss Marks teaches Fox Class.
- Mrs Willis, Mrs Shaw, Mrs Main and Mrs Philips support the teachers and children across Y4.
The teachers continue to have their entitlement to time for planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) and this will be covered by Mrs Shaw and Miss Thomas..
Mrs Shaw will also give extra support for booster groups.
Literacy and Mathematics
The children will work in their mixed ability class groups for literacy (writing and reading). They will be taught in ability sets for mathematics.
Each week, you should expect your child to bring home a ‘spotty’ book and a library book. The children have the opportunity to change these as and when they finish them as we encourage the children to read as much as they can.
This year we are introducing a new spelling programme called 'No Nonsense Spelling'. The children will be bringing home spellings to practise linked to those being taught.
We deliver the curriculum through a cross-curricular approach and aim to make it creative and enjoyable for the children, recognising that this is how our children learn best. At the beginning of each topic we have a ‘Sparkly Starter’ to hook the children in to their learning and a ‘Fab Finish’ to round off and celebrate their learning. An example of this is during the ‘Rotten Romans’ topic where we start the topic with a visit to The Priest's House museum and will finish with a Roman Banquet when you will be invited to school to celebrate your child’s learning.
More information and detail about the curriculum can be found on our termly curriculum maps.
Y4 Weekly Timetable: Year 4 Timetable
To enrich our curriculum we have arranged a number of visits:
- The Priest's House Museum
- Tivoli Show
- Leeson House Residential
Please make sure that PE kit is in school each day. The children need a white t-shirt, black shorts or jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt and suitable footwear. Please ensure all items are clearly named. Earrings must be removed on PE day.
Year 4 have PE on a Monday and Wednesday.
The reward charts that were introduced three years ago have improved behaviour significantly and the children very much look forward to visiting Mrs Hartley’s reward shop! These will continue this year alongside class rewards. The class chooses the class reward, and they have to earn it by achieving a number of marbles in their jar. We have also introduced a ‘Wow’ certificate so that we can write and inform you of your child’s achievements.
Each class also has a ‘stop chair’. When a child has had a warning to stop their behaviour but continue, we will ask them to sit on the chair until we feel they are ready to join in with the learning. Parents will be informed if this has been used.
Due to an increase in numbers the children now have their playtime for the first half of lunch break and eat for the second half.
Our playground is separated into different fun zones where the children can take part in a range of activities using outdoor play equipment.
The children receive home learning weekly on either Literacy or Maths activities. Home learning is handed out on a Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday.
